Is cutting and welding the same as torches and heat producing devices (permit wise)?

    in General Discussions

The Department is starting to do permitting online, many of the applications I feel are redundant. So I am asking the FPAM forum what do you know about this question?

Hey Sean, Bob Bourke here from Lynn (Ret.) . The section on Torches and Heat Producing Devices was added to 527 CMR in the early 80's to cover torches and other heat producing devices used to apply or remove materials from buildings, paint, rubber roofing etc. I proposed the addition to 527 CMR after a large multiple alarm fire was caused by a construction crew applying a rubber roof to a large warehouse building. Prior to that fire there was no regulation to address the use of a flame to apply or remove materials. So it is not the exact same permit as cutting or welding even though the requirements are similar. I hope this answers your question.

Mr. Bourke, thank you for your response, that makes a lot of sense and was a perfectly answered.
