For over 25 years the Fire Prevention Association of Massachusetts has been promoting Fire Sprinkler systems in one and two family dwellings. As a former president of this association as well as a member of the Fire Prevention Fire Protection Advisory Board of the Massachusetts Board of Building Regulations and Standards for 25 years we repeatedly proposed sprinkling of 1 & 2 family dwellings in Massachusetts. The biggest opposition of putting a sprinkler provision from Building Officials and the Homebuilding industry was that if it was so important it should be in the International residential code adopted by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Well guess what? The IRC now requires Automatic Sprinklers in all 1 & 2 family dwellings but the Massachusetts Building Officials at the behest of the Massachusetts Home Builders Assn. have opposed the requirement and have promulgated a Massachusetts Amendment to the IRC to remove the requirement for Automatic sprinklers in 1 & 2 Family dwellings in MA. It's time to adopt the International Residential Code without local amendments and sprinkle 1 & 2 Family dwellings
